I ended up getting a great steel touring bike for $923. Mission accomplished. Thank you Arthur!
NEVER NEVER AGAIN. Buyer beware. Rudeness & incompetence on the part of so-called manager (name on receipt is 'Gabe'). This is the WORST BIKE SHOP in DC. I went into the shop to buy an inner tube specifying the correct dimensions (which were validated by the receipt) and when I got home and had dismounted wheel and tyre I realized Mr Gabe had given me a wrong-sized tube. I scrambled til late at night with patch and glue. Next evening I returned to the shop politely asking for a refund upon return of the wrong-size tube. Response: 'I admit I made a mistake but we do not give refunds'. This is the perfect example of caveat emptor. I will not set foot in that shop again. Upper management should say goodbye to their INCOMPETENT manager.
I brought my bike in for new brake pads and handle bar wrapping. The cost was $105 which I thought was a bit steep. When I went and picked up the bike my tires were flat and the chain was off the gears. I told the guy working there about this and asked if he'd fill up the tires. He told me there was a pump outside I could use...less than satisfactory customer service.
One suggestion I have is that the bike mechanics should try to make eye contact and greet everyone who drops in to have their bike worked on ASAP. When I dropped into the shop, there were two mechanics working and several people waiting awkwardly waiting to be recognized by one of the mechanics. I understand they are focused on the work, but all you have to say is, "Hey! I'll be right with you. :)"
When my Aurora bike arrived, there was a slight irregularity with the frame. Rather than ignore the problem and sell me the bike as is (they probably could have gotten away with that), Arthur wrote be a personal email explaining the problem. One week later, I had a new frame and some upgraded Schwalbe Marathon tires with my new bike.
I have been to this location of City Bikes many times for both parts and servce and I have never had a bad experience. A couple of years ago, I bought a frame online to build my own bike, and I ended up going to City Bikes for a few parts and to put in a few things that I didn't have tools for. I always had great, friendly service and the prices weren't as bad as I expected on the work.
As someone deep into hardcore sport riding, this might not be the best place, although they do have a variety of bikes, knowledgable staff and passionate about riding. They know what they're doing. However, their best asset, I feel, is the variety of commuter bikes and hybrids. As the names of the shop says, if you're looking for "city bikes" this is the place in DC.
First off, Arthur, the shop manager gets five stars. He is knowledgeable, friendly, and not pushy at all. I was searching for an affordable (under $1,000), steel touring bike. I visited 5 different shops around town, and this is the only store I found that sold Jamis bikes. Arthur let me take his own personal Jamis Aurora bike for a ride, and I decided to order my own from City Bikes.
