This museum has many exhibits pertaining to American history and culture. It's very large with well laid out exhibits. The cafe has pretty good food but it was a bit expensive at $10-$15 per person.
Come early and plan to stay a while. 3 hours or so to take it in skimming some exhibits that may not interest you. Do know if you are here at closing they will all but toss you out. We were looking through the price of freedom exhibit today when they came through and very rudely told us it was closing time "the exit is this way". This was 10 minutes until close!! Great exhibits though.
The main negative was that the large Foucault Pendulum was gone. My kids were looking forward to seeing it (since I was hyping it up) but it was removed ~20 years ago.
Eleanor Roosevelt could have a museum all to herself, and she is just one of the many influential First Ladies.
Let's talk about your First Ladies exhibit, shall we? I was excited to bring my son and daughter in there, as some of the First Ladies of the United States have done some pretty remarkable things. Imagine my surprise when we were met with their dresses and China patterns. Is that what the First Ladies most notable accomplishments are? I think not!
An opportunity has been missed here, Smithsonian! You are better than that, and so are the women who have served our country for over 200 years.
My biggest regret is not having more time to walk through this museum. I'm a huge pop culture fan, so this was the museum for me. But unfortunately, it closed sooner than I thought it would, and it was our last day in DC, so I missed a good deal of it. I did get to see Indiana Jones' hat and whip, Bert and Ernie puppets from Sesame Street, and a piece of steel from one of the World Trade Centers. That was chilling because I wasn't expecting it and just walked up on it. But, again, we went too late, and the employees were herding us out at exactly 5pm. The employees are rude, coming up behind you and yelling, "You need to leave, we're closed now!" The rudeness of the employees really put a damper on the experience of this museum for us.
It's a really nice museum with lots to see. From beginning to end, it was a smooth process. Security was fast and all. This may have only been a problem with me, but I wish there were clear starting points because I was always starting in the wrong part. I like that they had benches to sit because I definitely got tired of standing and reading. I have to go back again because the African American exhibit was closed and I didn't make it through the whole museum. I'm happy that I got to go though
