Fun museum. Out of the ordinary from usual DC sites and museums.
It's too bad this museum is currently in limbo -- while it does cost money, unlike a lot of other worthwhile museums in DC, the exhibits are top quality. I especially enjoyed learning about bank robbers and walking through an overview of crime and punishment since the middle ages. Just don't expect a critique of the police state or police brutality -- this is a pretty biased view of the criminal justice system.
We also participated in a one hour workshop in which an experienced crime scene investigator walked us through the steps of solving a crime. We analyzed crime scene photos, discussed the processes followed by police and investigators, and even examined some specimens (dead pigs) to see if we could figure out how they had been killed! It was really an interesting experience and the workshop leader was a great instructor with lots of information.
I had a great time visiting the Museum of Crime and Punishment. There was so much information - every aspect of both crimes and punishments through history were displayed. It's a bit off the beaten path from the Smithsonian museums, but it's well worth the walk to get there. There were some fun interactive areas that showed more about how criminals are treated - I especially liked having my finger print taken and watching my friend as she tried to 'break out' of jail!
This museum was really well presented with a variety of styles of displays. We spent about 3 hours going through and really could have spent more time. It was a great afternoon!
I had such a wonderful time at this Museum … I spent two days there and barely got through two thirds of it. It encompasses three huge subjects: crime, policing, and punishment. Of course, lots of major, famous crimes and historic figures are missing, but the nation has one huge, dark underbelly that would take several more buildings to house; so given the limited space and money, the Museum has done an incredible job – especially in making the exhibits interactive for younger people. If you are interested in the dark side of the human mind, don’t miss this Museum when you visit the nation’s Capital.
Pirates, bankrobbers, and other seedy sorts get locked away for eternity in exhibits that show how crime doesn't pay.
