I will say that there is a very steep climb to get to the house itself - stairs if you're feeling froggy and a winding path if you aren't. Bring good shoes! And a camera, because the views are absolutely breath taking.
So inspiring!! Make sure you get there early enough!!! You watch a video in the welcome center first. Then the tour. It's free. Go do it.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. There was a short movie that gave a bit of background on Frederick Douglass that they played before the tour of his home. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour entertaining as well as informative. There's a gift shop and parking at the welcome center. Be sure to call and reserve a spot on the tour ahead of your visit.
An impressive site. It is out of the way, away from the main tourist attractions of DC, but a very important story for all Americans to know. The home is high on a bluff overlooking Washington, above the Anacostia neighborhood, across the river in South East DC. The concrete visitors center is dug out of the side of the hill. You start your tour here with quotes from his writings and a timeline of his life followed by a video of his life story. The house can only be seen by guided tours of 10 people so call ahead to make a reservation. The house is very large and decorated in the late 19th century style. Since the home stayed in the family it has many of the original family artifacts. The National Parks Service needs to make a new video and make sure their staff are more thoroughly trained on the story of Frederick Douglass's life. Definitely worth a visit. Makes me want to know more about this important man's life.
Very historic site. The house has been around since 1800s. It still have original wash bowl cabinets and other fixtures. I Love history and Im an educator.
My honey and I had no conception of how close this place was to us, so we were so pleased when we made the trip across town to visit. The tour is absolutely worth your time and contribution. Everyone who works there is knowledgeable and kind as well.
