This is a great museum and one of the busiest museums in DC! It is massive though, and a great place for kids. They have a lot of interactive exhibits with lots to see and do. If you want to view anything in the IMAX or the planetarium it will cost, but the costs aren’t much. They have gift shops scattered throughout, which is nice and it limits overcrowding at one location.
This was an excellent experience. To here are so many airplanes and rockets to see. So much history in one building and has very different things than the museum at Dulles. This place is very kid friendly with an entire area devoted to children's rivaling the see and touch museums. Parking is highly limited. I recommend that you take the metro in to DC and park elsewhere. Hours are great. There is increased security at the doors with bag x-ray and metal detectors. The lines will go out the doors so hope it isn't raining when you go. There is a planetarium and imax in the museum. Some of the extras cost money although admission to the museum is free. You can easily spend an entire day there and not see everything. This is certainly a place you can go again and again and not get tired of it. They are stroller friendly there so you can bring them in although outside food is not allowed.
This museum has a lot of cool exhibits pertaining to aviation and space exploration. There was an area for young kids to play around with hands on exhibits that demonstrated some basic physics.
Kiwi view: a bit understated considering America's history in this area. But it has HEAPS of stuff. A fun kids area that they kids enjoyed interacting with things that tried to teach them about flight. Queues looked bad for the security check outside but they went quick. Was actually open till 7:30 (December time) even though Google maps said it closed at 5:30
The only negative was the slow security line. While not as thorough as airport security, jackets and all metals needed to be removed before walking through metal detectors. I understand the need for security but this process could be much improved to keep the line moving quicker.
This is by far one of the best museums along the national mall to bring kids to. This was the only museum that had a long line, but the line moves fast. They have several rooms to be interactive, which makes it great for kids. You can go inside some of the airplanes and ships too. Truly a hands on museum.
I go here often to get fun birthday gifts for kids that live out of town. If you’re in the DC area it’s a must see. You can take as little or as long as you want, but I’d say most of the guests I bring stay around 3-4 hours.
