Hillwood is the best hidden secret of DC. For a free garden, it's jaw-dropping and must not be skipped. It has beautiful gardens from the Japanese Style Garden to the Rose Garden. It has a museum that is the former residence of a Russian art collector who had countless stories surrounding her. This same woman owned Mar a Lago, the golf resort now owned by the President. This museum has extremely intelligent docents that will guide you through a time of luxury and exuberance. It should also be noted that Hillwood attracts exhibits from world-famous artists and the Smithsonian. Their temporary exhibits are carefully curated and the flowers inside and outside of the mansion are picked specifically to match the current exhibit, season, and style; just as Marjorie Merriweather Post (former owner) would have done. Hillwood is a must visit in DC.

Fascinating glimpse into the world of the rich art collector. A livable house filled with rare treasures, as opulent in detail as Hearst Castle but designed on a more human scale and with a more discerning collection. Beautifully designed gardens with a great variety of relaxing, intimate spaces. Wonderful profusion of orchids in greenhouse. Anyone who enjoys French furniture, Russian jewelry, icons, and paintings, or mid-century fashions will find plenty to enjoy. Plan on at least half a day to absorb what's here.

Stunning mansion and gardens, very opulent. I suggest starting with the video which is a great introduction. We only had 2 hours so we decided to get the audio tour. It was excellent. The ladies at the entrance were very knowledgeable, friendly and classy. They have a cafeteria on site. If you are taking a Lyft or Uber just ask the security guard to let the car pass so that you can be dropped off at the entrance of the mansion, otherwise it's a very short 4' walk.

This is Estate is massive! I thought we would be here for an hour but ended up wandering throughout the mansion, through all the jewels (including real Russian crown jewels!), the gardens, even a pet cemetary for close to 4 hours. The guided tour was amazing! Time flew by and we still didn't see everything! So happy that there was a cafe on site because I was definitely starving by the end of it. Will definitely return for Sunday tea!

A truly amazing place. The history of three Post heiress was interesting. Even in winter the garden and greenhouse were beautiful. The staff and volunteers were very friendly and knowledgeable. Will have to visit again in spring.
