Wonderful food, and amazing and carefully thought selection. Definitely try it. A great way to start the museum, or for a mid-day break between the concourse section and the upper level. Delicious.
I see multiple complaints about the menu prices and yes they are pricey but it comes with the territory. Also you don't have to eat there. If you read enough reviews and the prices are out of your range plan to eat before or after going to the museum
I love the nods to the different regions of African American cusine, showing that it's more than just your "soul food" fare of fried chicken and mac+cheese. There were plenty of options, I had a hard time choosing.
I had the Catfish poboy which was delicious. The cat fish pieces were huge.
The museum is free and so don't be surprised that they recoup some of their operations costs in the price of the food. It is indeed expensive but worth the visit to complete your trip to the museum. I had the jambalaya, collard greens and cornbread. Loved every bit of it and though the portions looked small, I was very full.
The staff was very unprofessional, if the first person you encounter is the reflection of your restaurant service then you have succeeded to be unimpressive. The greeter started yelling at somebody she thought was bypassing the line, she ran through the line talking very loudly only to learn that the people were supposed to be there, could have and should have handled better. The next person was the young lady at the first counter, it was obvious she did not enjoy her job,she was worst server I have encountered she was rude she sloped your food on your plate leaving some hanging off the plate or dripping when you picked it up she disappeared several times no excuse me I will be back in a minute , in the Middle of taking your order.just walked away. The only good thing was the servings size which were very good, and probably more than it needed to be. Please don’t let this
I made the reservation for Sunday at 2 pm. We arrived early to look at some other monuments and sight-seeing but mainly to ensure we didn't miss our time which I strongly suggest you do.

Fried chicken and sides were good, pepper pot was not. Not cheap. If you want to save, I would recommend the fried chicken (two pieces) which comes with a selection of two sides from anywhere in cafe. Add a third side and you have a solid meal for two people.
We were able to get in the building early to go to the Sweet Home cafe. (There is security check so try to go by stadium/arena//coliseum/ballpark bag policy. ) Beware: the portions are large so plan on sharing or come hungry. It's pricey avg $21 for entree sides and drink but as I said the portions are large and the food is delicious. The entrees are categorized by region, Agricultural South, Creole Coast , Northern States and Western Range. They also have salads, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chicken strips and fries. It's community seating so be prepared to share tables- we're family. There are no to-go boxes or cups. No food or drink is allowed in the museum.
The fountain drink was $3.40 which is outrageous but you can get water cups if you don't mind taking multiple trips after 3 sips.
