The museum is phenomenal. Amazing, well presented collection. People who work at the museum are super knowledgeable and are very helpful with questions. However the design of the building map is the worst.
Absolutely phenomenal! I'm not a huge art fan though I am fond of museums. Everything about this place is lovely. The architecture is astounding. The rooms are large ans easily accessible. There is so much to see and take in. We spent two hours in the museum and only saw a fourth of the second floor. Would definitely love to visit again and definitely worth a stop if you're in DC
Living in the burbs, we only occasionally go into town because of the traffic and parking issues, but when we do, we usually add a visit to the National Gallery. It is truly one of the finest museums in the world and one of very few that is free to the public. Currently the featured exhibition is a major show of Vermeer, or more precisely Vermeer and his contemporaries since there are more works by other artists than by Vermeer, and some would suggest that others might have been as good or better than he was. Whatever, it is a terrific show and another example of why the National Gallery of Art is such a fantastic place to visit.
I was lost on the ground floor, trying to find Renaissance section, when Forrest, the gentleman who works on the ground floor of the main building, gave me the map annotated with his notes and highlights. Whoever is responsible for that map design should include his notes there, as they were hugely helpful to navigate the galleries. I spent 5 hours in the museum and it was the best experience ever. Without annotations on the map, it wouldn't be the same.
Amazing place to visit. All the employees were very helpful and nice. Free admission. Really big place, need at least two days to see everything. The contemporary art section was really interesting! The gift shop is worth visiting.
The art is amazing, and I love how the rooms are designed contextually.
National Treasure, and it is free.
I am disgusted by the security guards at this museum. The National Gallery is something people are excited about and come from all around the world to visit. You would think the staff would be made of people who like to see others enjoying themselves.
However, the staff is atrocious. At closing, my friend and I were waiting for the elevator on the fourth floor of the East gallery. We were waiting with an elderly couple and a couple with two children, one of which was in a stroller. While waiting, a woman came over and screamed at us, "Oh no, you gotta take the steps! The elevator's taking too long!" We had only been waiting a minute or so. She kept screaming at us until we took the stairs, and the elderly couple was visibly uncomfortable. On the way down, I saw another man begging a guard to go back into the room because he dropped something, and the guard yelled, "Man, we're trying to get you people out of here!"
